‘Cherries, Chocolate and Jazz’ at the library Feb. 20

There will be a “Cherries, Chocolate and Jazz” fundraiser 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 20 (snowdate Feb. 21) at the Lower Macungie Township Library. Appetizers, desserts and beverages will be provided with music by the Kutztown University Jazz Quartet. Tickets are on sale at the library and are available through Feb. 13.

Tickets are not available at the door. Proceeds benefit the Lower Macungie Library. This event is also sponsored by Myers Benner Corporation, Lafayette Ambassador Bank and QNB Bank.

The library book club will meet 10:30 a.m. Feb. 3 to discuss “The Children Act” by Ian McEwan. The next meeting is March 2.

AARP Taxaide counselors offer free tax help for taxpayers with low to moderate income with special attention to those 60 years and older. Before tax season begins, AARP will be at the library to schedule appointment days during tax season. Appointment scheduling days will be 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 22 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 28.

The Teen Advisory Board, a group of middle school and high school students, will meet 3:30 p.m. Feb. 19 to plan programs, share opinions on library materials and earn community service hours. All are welcome.

There will be a Family Storytime “Feet are Neat!” 10:30 a.m. Jan. 23 to celebrate “Measure Your Feet Day.” There will be stories about feet, and socks and shoes. All ages are welcome. The library is offering a Crazy 8 Math Club for kids in grades three through five 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoons starting Jan. 20 and running through March 9. Participants should plan on attending all eight sessions.

Messy Mondays is a new family storytime and craft program. The storytime is designed for the preschool skill level but the activities are designed for the whole family to work together. The next program is 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Feb. 1.

Rookie Readers program for grades kindergarten through second meets 6:30 p.m. Feb. 8. There will be stories, literacy games, writing activities and more.

Library League for grades three through five meets 6:30 p.m. Feb. 15 for a story and hands-on exploration.

Storytimes are offered for all preschool ages. Check the library for the schedule.

Adult computer classes including Microsoft Word, Excel, Intro to the Web and social networking are offered monthly. The schedule is available at the library. Class size is limited and sign-up is required for the above events. The library is accepting books for the spring book sale. The following items will not be accepted: magazines, textbooks, Reader’s Digest condensed books, cassette tapes, VHS tapes and any moldy or water damaged books.

The Friends of the Library will not meet in February. The next meeting is 10 a.m. March 19 in the library.

The Emmaus High School Orchestra will host a coffeehouse 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in the cafeteria. A wide variety of musical entertainment will be provided by the students. Coffee, hot chocolate and desserts will be available for purchase. There is a cover charge. All proceeds benefit the orchestra department. The snow date is Feb. 19.

Concordia Lutheran Preschool will have a spaghetti dinner 4 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30. Tickets are almost sold out. The preschool and church are located on Brookside Road. Call the preschool at 610-965-3265 for reservations.

Concordia Lutheran Church will host a Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 9. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and beverages will be available. A freewill offering will be accepted. The Emmaus High School Drama Department will present “Once Upon a Mattress” 7 p.m. March 9, 10, 11 and 12 and 2 p.m. March 12 and 13. There will be a Gold Card preview performance 6 p.m. March 8. The Gold Card serves as your ticket.

Online ticket sales begin Feb. 2. The website is www.eastpennsd.org/ehs; a link is available on the homepage.

Tickets can also be purchased at the EHS main office lobby 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session beginning Feb. 22. Telephone orders will not be taken through the main office.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Feb. 2 and 16 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center offers a number of activities. Adult fitness classes include chair yoga, Walkercise, yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Zumba and Power House Fitness. Children’s programs include Mommy/Daddy and Me Soccer, Calling All Superheroes, Toddlers and Tutus, Minecraft and yoga classes.

A Safe Sitter Program will be offered 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 23.

Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The center is closed on Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.

Our daughter recently had back surgery and during her recuperation it was more practical to have her and Ben switch bedrooms. Ben came down after his first night in Caroline’s bed, which has a layer of memory foam, and said, “That was the best night’s sleep ever.” Caroline, who loves her memory foam, fixed him with an evil eye and replied, “Don’t get used to it!” That should encourage a speedy recovery.
