LHS boys, girls win

Liberty’s boys’ swim team defeated William Allen 94-56 last week, and Liberty’s girls also defeated Allen 99-57.

Hurricane captain, John Buttillo, said, “We have people missing, but this is a fun meet. We put different people in events to get their times in, or people in events they haven’t swum before.”

Paige McCloskey, Julia McCarthy, Sabrina Krotzer, and Kendra Smith won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.77, and Jase Smith, Christopher Chambers, Reid Rossi, and Nolan Vanatta won the same event in 1:44.40.

McCarthy and Chambers won the 200 free, Jessica Becker and Vanatta won the 200 IM, and Maggie Walters and Anthony Delcorso took first place in the 50 free.

Regarding the 200 free, Chambers said, “I didn’t feel like I was going that fast. The 200 is a distance version of a sprint. It felt good.”

Although Chambers did not compete in the 500 free during the Allen meet, one of his goals is to break Liberty’s 500 free record, set in 1997, before the Hurricane sophomore was even born.

“Every day I come here and swim 5,000 to 6,000 yards for pace and distance. Practices were really hard [over Christmas break], but we got a couple extra days off. I kind of like having hard practices,” he said.

At the beginning of freshman year, Chambers swam a 5:45 in the 500 free. He has dropped time to 5:26, and the record is 4:33.41.

Rachel Finn placed first in diving with 238.60 points, and Kellen Rogers placed first for the boys with 135.85 points.

Kay Wetmore and Robert Negron won the 100 butterfly, McCarthy and Jake Evert were first in the 100 free, and Erin Wetmore and Omar Mohamed won the 500 free.

Ben Stuckey, Dylan Zukawski, Delcorso, and Negron teamed up to win the 200 free relay for the Hurricanes.

The Canaries took first place points in the 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, and the 400 free relay.
