Early morning crash ends in foot chase on New Year’s Day

An Allentown man and his passenger, also of Allentown, face charges after they led police on a brief foot chase after a traffic accident in which their vehicle struck a tree in Salisbury Township.

Charges of driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, and recklessly endangering others were filed in District Court 31-1-08 against Edgar Joel Ramirez, 18, and his passenger Kendi Valentin Acosta, 18.

According to police, a Pennsylvania State Trooper attempted to stop Ramirez’s vehicle along eastbound Interstate 78 at the Summit Lawn exit ramp to West Rock Road around 3:22 a.m. Jan. 1. Ramirez allegedly attempted to flee police, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree. Ramirez allegedly fled the accident scene on foot but was soon taken into custody by police. Acosta also allegedly was taken into police custody.

Police determined Ramirez allegedly was operating his vehicle under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and was in possession of a small amount of marijunana.

Acosta also allegedly was found to have a small amount of marijuana.

Only a few hours into the New Year Eastern Salisbury firefighters, along with St. Luke's EMS, are dispatched to the 2200 block of West Rock Road for an accident. The accident appeared to stem from a police incident on Interstate 78. The incident ended on West Rock Road where a vehicle left the road and struck a tree.
