Veterans among those recognized by the Landis Family Foundation

The Landis Family Foundation and Star Dealerships of the Lehigh Valley served up a morning of golf and camaraderie recently, when hundreds went to Green Pond Country Club for a fundraising announcement luncheon.

The Landis Family Foundation Landis Cup $1,000,000 Charity Shootout was a warm affair between longtime friends and dozens of nonprofit participants from around the Lehigh Valley, including at least a half-dozen that work with veterans.

Carol Landis explained the third annual event would have resulted in awards equaling $1 million in the event of a hole-in-one, and though that did not happen, $120,000 was distributed among participants.

Nearly 20 veterans, members of local groups, were honored by the Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council and received a standing ovation for their service.

The LVMAC itself was founded in 2003 and supports veterans social, networking and legislative programs, representative Alvin Thompson said.

The LVMAC, Canine Companions for Independence and The Hillside School, a K-8 school in Macungie specially designed for students with language-based disabilities, had the big takeaways at between $10,000 and $20,000 each.

But altogether 38 other nonprofits were represented and each got a check from a random drawing between $1,000 and $5,000. These include Lehigh Valley Amputee Support Group, Minsi Trails Council, Victory House of the Lehigh Valley, pediatric cancer support group Angel 34 and many others.

“You are all such amazing, amazing people. It is just incredible,” Landis said.
