Lehigh Gap open house offers greens, music and crafts

Bill and Lorraine Mineo bring the trimmings from their home-grown evergreens to be used to make wreaths and swags for the people attending the Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s Christmas open house.

Among the greens this year were juniper branches with large bunches of blue berries toward the ends of the branches.

Bill Mineo said the berries can be used in place of gin for drinks, but it only takes two or three for flavoring.

He told about the greens and occasionally suggested something that would go well together. The couple have years of experience making wreaths.

Lorraine demonstrated wreath making and is ready to help when someone doesn’t know how to proceed.

In addition to the greens, Mineos bring bows and pine cones for decoration.

A group comes all the way from the Hazleton Garden Club to make wreaths.

The juniper berries were a big hit as people chose their greens.

Inside the Osprey House there was music by Fritz and Belva Williams and crafts for children.

Cheryl Novak showed youthful attendees how to make a winged creature and when asked what it was, she gave it some thought and said it looked to her like a dragonfly angel.
