Salisbury grads excel at the next level
Several Salisbury athletes competed on college teams in the fall 2015 season.
In helping the Ursinus College women’s soccer team finish 12-6-1 and advance to Centennial Conference semifinals round, freshman Mackenzie Groff scored five goals (third on team) and added four assists (first on team) in 15 games (10 starts). She also recorded a 73.7 shot-on-goal percentage and hit three game-winning goals in her first season on the pitch.
DeSales University’s Emily Hoats, a junior goalie on the women’s socer team, started in net in 16 of the Bulldogs’ 20 games this season. In helping the team finish 14-6 overall (6-1 in the Mac Freedom Conference) and winning the conference tournament championship, Hoats recorded 46 saves and a 78 save percentage. She went 11-2 in net, allowing just 13 goals.
Bloomsburg University’s Tony David made 28 total tackles (10 solo) in nine games in his final season with the Huskies. He also tallied 5.5 tackles for loss and a sack to cap a 7-4 season for Bloom.
Kyle and Kelly Gonoude produced solid cross country seasons in their freshmen college seasons. Kyle, who is at DeSales University, placed 11th in the Misericordia Invitational 5K in a time of 17:19.56. His season-best time in the 8K came in the Gettysburg College Invitational where he placed 21st in 26:46.4 Kelly, who is at Moravian College, ran a season-best 24:54 in the 42nd Annual Paul Short 6000m Run.
Sophomore Katie Bucchin started in 17 games for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown soccer team and produced one shot on goal.
Sophomore Shannon Pennella, another Salisbury graduate and current DeSales soccer player, started in goal in two of the other Bulldogs’ games. She recorded two shutouts in the process and didn’t face a shot in net.
Catholic University junior Sean Adams played in 17 games (three starts) on the school’s mens soccer team. He recorded five shots, one on goal, in the Cardinals’ 7-10-2 season (4-3-1 in Landmark Conference).
Freshman Connor Wagner saw action in three games for the Moravian College men’s soccer team this past fall.
Moravian College freshman linebacker Matthew Heiserman played in one game for the Greyhounds in his inaugural season.
Teddy Denver, a freshman linebacker at Lebanon Valley College, got his collegiate playing days underway this past season.
