Mack to layoff 400 workers

Mack Trucks announced Dec. 15 the company would be laying off 400 workers.

Christopher Heffner, public relations manager with Mack, Greensboro, N.C. emailed The Press, “The layoffs are the result of our need to adapt production to meet market demand.

“The bargaining unit employees will not receive a severance package, but will get certain benefits based on the collective bargaining agreement.”

According to Heffner, the affected employees have not yet been identified and no entire departments be shut down.

The Mark Truck assembly plant will not see any changes in the types of vehicles it produces.

“The Class 8 heavy-duty truck market is cyclical, and we said several months ago that 2015 would be the peak year,” Heffner wrote. “We regret having to take this action, but we must adapt to market demand.”

The layoffs will take effect Jan. 25, 2016.
