Both men, arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Daniel Trexler, were committed to Lehigh County Jail in lieu of $300,000 bail.
Cruz and Quezada-Guzman were arrested after a joint investigation by the Upper Macungie Township Police, the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Pennsylvania National Guard Counter Drug Unit.
Drug Task Force Chief Detective Joseph Stauffer said the investigation is continuing.
An affidavit of probable cause alleges Upper Macungie Township police, the drug task force and the DEA were conducting a narcotics investigation Dec. 4 at 7248 Industrial Blvd., Upper Macungie.
Police and the task force suspected a package they obtained contained controlled substances.
After a township police K-9 provided a positive indication for a controlled substance, a search warrant was obtained.
The package was opened, and a sample field tested positive for cocaine.
Arrangements allegedly had been made by Cruz and Quezada-Guzman via cellphone to pick up the package from a trailer at the Industrial Boulevard, address.
The two allegedly removed the package from the trailer and placed it in the back of a vehicle in which they had traveled from Providence, R.I., and the Bronx, N.Y.
Quezada-Guzman identified himself as “Eddy Evangelista” at the scene.
Police later determined he was Joselito Quezada-Guzman.
Stauffer estimated the street value of the cocaine seized was $1.7 million.
