Steidinger gives report to board

School boards are pleased to see and hear what students are doing and, at the Northwestern Lehigh Nov. 18 meeting, they had several opportunities to do so.

Superintendent Mary Anne Wright came to the board meeting room to announce a slight delay, as the board was in executive session.

She then thanked the parents for bringing their student cheerleaders and artists to the meeting.

Board member Joe Reiter, in a correction to the minutes, said he thought Bill Dellicker’s book about his time in Vietnam should be used in classes.

In other matters, Josephine Steidinger gave the student representative to the school board report.

National Honor Society inducted 49 new members and the Science National Honor Society inducted 36, she explained.

Lehigh Career and Technical Institute inducted Kylie Cloonan into its Honor Society and the Key Club collected 67 pints of blood during a Nov. 5 drive.

The Bo Tkach Foundation and the family of Robert Best of Northern Lehigh will present a program at Penn’s Peak.

Northwestern Lehigh was invited to attend. Collaborative sessions will teach how to foster a culture of caring in schools and communities to provide mental health awareness.

Steidinger announced many sports wins: Boys soccer league championship, District Xl, and PIAA state semifinalists; Girls soccer, league silver medalists and qualified for District Xl AA tournament; Girls cross country earned a silver medal at District Xl AA and qualified for states where they finished seventh as a team; Robbie Leiser placed seventh at the District Xl cross country meet and qualified for states; Maddie Consuelos placed seventh and Molly Tarvin placed fifth at District Xl. Consuelos was 27th at the PIAA state meet.

Varsity cheerleaders won silver medals at the Colonial League competition. Two hundred fifty students are trying out for fall and winter teams.

The middle school Pink Out raised $16,000 to benefit the Lehigh Valley Hospital Pediatric Cancer Care Unit.

In 2011, they raised more than $15,000.

The high school band and choral concert will be performed 7 p.m. on Dec. 16 at the Middle School. The Science Olympiad competition will take place Dec. 12 in Islip, N.Y.

The board approved a grant application of $1,500 to offset the costs for the Olympiad.

The debate team scored five wins at the Pennridge debate and did well at Catasauqua.
