Rec board receives year-end update

Jim Hughes, maintenance person for the Northwestern Recreation Commission Community Park, reported to the board Nov. 23 one batting cage is 95 percent complete and he is obtaining a bid for preparing the base for another cage at field 2.

He also reported a garage door spring broke, so a new set will be installed. Drain tiles were suggested for areas of poor drainage with sod used to replace the grass. All hedges have been trimmed.

New nets are in for the volleyball court but will not be installed until spring.

Forty trees have been planted and are mulched.

Hughes asked about obtaining bags to hang on the trees to allow water to drip slowly for watering.

He will wait for spring because if the season is wet they may not be needed.

Hughes said the dirt removed to plant the trees had too much shale and stone to be useful as field fill, so it will be hauled away.

In other matters, Heidelberg Township representative Steve Bachman is still working on finding someway to make the crossing from the high school to the rec fields safer.

The Northwestern Youth Athletic Association has purchased two more portable lights.

President Don Link said the lights will be useful for the annual Night in the Country celebration as the NYAA lets the commission borrow the lights for that night.

New playground equipment has been installed.

Justin Smith, Lynn Township representative, reported the dog park and Frisbee course have been completed at Ontelaunee Park.

Link thanked everyone for their service. He said the job is not glamorous and it requires effort to get things done.

Link added the position of secretary is always the new man’s job and thanked Ron Morrison for an excellent job as he will not be on the rec commission next year.

LeRoy Sorensen, another school board representative, will also be replaced.

He has served many terms often being helpful with his knowledge of the legal aspects of work at the rec fields.

Rec commission meetings scheduled for 2016 are: reorganization on Jan. 27, then Feb. 24, March 30, April 27, May 25, June 29, July 27, Aug. 31, Sept. 28, Oct. 26 and Nov. 30.

The rec board meets 7:30 p.m. in the school district administration conference room.
