Head of School named

The Swain School Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Dr. Shannan Boyle Schuster as Swain’s new Head of School, commencing July 1, 2016, when Interim Head of School David Hursty completes his year-long term.

Schuster, an Allentown native, brings to Swain more than 20 years experience as a teacher and administrator. She is currently the Assistant Head of School at Friends’ Central School, an independent nursery to Grade 12 day school in Wynnewood.

Prior to her time at Friends’ Central, Schuster served as the dean of faculty for eight years at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va.

While at Friends’ Central, she helped build a STEAM and Maker program, directed, planned and rolled out a 1:1 iPad program and was instrumental in developing and providing support and professional development for faculty.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in math, Schuster earned her master’s degree in educational administration from Columbia University and her doctorate degree in school administration from the University of Virginia.

After her graduation from Vanderbilt, Schuster taught at several Catholic and public schools as a homeroom, reading and math teacher including two schools in the Lehigh Valley.

Swain is a co-educational, independent day school offering a quality education to 311 students who come from 22 area school districts. Small class sizes, an integrated curriculum, state-of-the-art technology resources and a thorough program of character education, science, languages, arts and athletics are features of the school, which was founded in 1929. It is located at 1100 S. 24th St., Allentown.
