Students help the community

Student representatives Agostino D’Ancona, Matthew Fainor and Rania Nimeh reported to the board members at the Nov. 18 meeting activities Salisbury students are involved in to help the community.

Veterans Day programs were held at both Harry S Truman Elementary School and Western Salisbury Elementary School.

HST students are collecting items to be sent to veterans. WSE students created letters to be sent to troops in Afghanistan.

Salisbury Middle School students held a canned food drive and have collected over 545 cans.

The environmental club at Salisbury High School has placed new recycling bins throughout the school.

The student government association at SHS will hold a blood drive 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 17. SGA has also purchased a banner, “All are Accepted.”

SGA collected 1,600 cans of food in the recent food drive at the high school.

In other business, three overnight trips were approved: Model United Nations trip to Baltimore, Md. for a conference Feb. 18 to 21, 2016; the high school wrestling team to Mount Joy Dec. 19 and 20 for a wrestling tournament and marching band to Tampa, Fla., Dec. 29, 2016 to Jan. 1, 2017 to participate in the Outback Bowl.

Resignations include Mary Agnew as a full-time social studies teacher at SHS effective Nov. 9, Kailey DeOliveira as an instructional assistant at HST effective Oct. 23 and Jodie Bilger as a cafeteria worker at SHS effective Nov. 16.

New hires include Wendy Hauser, part-time ESL teacher at HST; Jennifer Smith, part-time instructional assistant at HST; Kelly Moser, part-time instructional assistant at WSE; Michael Murphy, contracted for special education services three days a week; Erin Brown, part-time nurse assistant at SMS; Tanya Garcia Warren, part-time nurse assistant at SHS; David Puckett, junior varsity football coach for the 2015-2016 school term, Brittany Burda, SMS cheerleading coach for the winter 2015-2016 season and Steven Wagner, part-time instructional assistant at SHS effective Nov. 23.

Volunteer coaches approved include Edward Nesfeder, assistant wrestling coach, Adam Young, assistant boys basketball coach, Brent Maron, assistant boys basketball coach, Christopher Basile, assistant boys basketball coach, Michael Garrigan, assistant girls basketball coach and Caitlin Hrebik, assistant girls basketball coach.

Board members had a first reading on Policy 246 on Student Wellness. Board member Dr. Chris Spedaliere noted some concerns with the policy which will be addressed at the second reading 7 p.m. Dec. 2 at the administration building.
