Rescue group works to decrease animal overpopulation

A relatively new animal rescue is working to minimize animal overpopulation in the Lehigh Valley.

Starting Over Animal Rescue, Schnecksville, a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization was founded in 2013 by Gloria Scheetz.

Scheetz began SOAR because she saw the need for stray, feral and abandoned cats to be spayed or neutered to minimize the overpopulation of stray cats.

“Our mission is to create community awareness and gain support of animal needs through educational efforts and to house and care for abandoned or neglected animals,” Scheetz said. “Every year, thousands of healthy companion animals are euthanized simply because no one will take them in.

“We offer no-kill solutions to the growing crisis of dogs and cat overpopulation.”

Scheetz said SOAR, funded by private donations, is supported by business and community partners and concerned residents.

The group operates through the efforts of dedicated volunteers who offer their personal homes to shelter and care for homeless animals.

In addition to the spay and neuter program, SOAR offers feline leukemia testing, vaccinations and micro-chipping.

“Every Saturday we have pet adoptions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Petco in Whitehall,” Scheetz said. “We are looking for volunteers to help at events.”

Scheetz said foster homes are needed for kitten and puppies.

“We also need someone who can help us create a newsletter,” Scheetz said.

Scheetz and husband, David, live in Andreas, Schuylkill County.
