Wheeler honored at final board meeting

Joyce Wheeler, a member of the Whitehall-Coplay School Board, attended her last meeting Nov. 9.

“As many of you know, tonight marks the final regular meeting for Mrs. Joyce Wheeler as a member of the Whitehall-Coplay School Board,” Whitehall-Coplay School District Superintendent John Corby said. “Needless to say, it’s a bittersweet feeling for our school district.”

Corby described Wheeler as a very active member for more than 20 years.

She held several positions on the board as well as its committees, he said.

“She has been our liaison to our community organizations as well as educational affiliates, most notably LCTI,” Corby said.

Board member Eileen Abruzzi commented on how Wheeler acted as a mentor to her when she joined the board.

“When I came on 18 years ago, she was immediately a mentor,” Abruzzi said. “I can’t describe all the time and talking; truly there’s not too many other people that are so selfless. All she wants is what’s best for the community.”

Corby spoke of Wheeler’s commitment to supporting the students in the arts, athletics and academics.

“In serving as a board member for over 20 years, I think it’s safe to say that Joyce’s number one priority is that this school district provides each and every student with every opportunity that we can,” he said.

Board member Wayne Grim commented that someone would need to take over as the guiding force to keep things moving.

Vice President Robert Kolb said, “Back in the days I was teaching, there was not any doubt that you were a positive driving force for the improvement of the education of our students. Everyone had the highest respect for you.”

Corby, along with President Tina Koren, presented Wheeler with a certificate of recognition from the Pennsylvania School Board Association for her dedication to the school board.

Wheeler tearfully accepted the certificate, after which she said, “Let’s get this show on the road.”

Those in attendance laughed and applauded.

After the meeting, Wheeler told The Press that she will still be active in the community, as she is a part of the Communities That Care program.
