Crouthamel, Roelker reach D-11 semifinal

Each postseason keeps getting better for the Salisbury doubles tennis tandem of Leandra Roelker and Claudia Crouthamel.

As freshmen in 2013, the duo won one match in their first appearance at the District 11 Class AA doubles tournament.

Last season, as sophomores, the won two matches to reach the tournament’s second day and the quarterfinal round.

This year, they kept up the progress by reaching the semifinals last Friday at Saucon Valley High School.

“Each year is very different in terms of maturity and strategy and stuff,” said Roelker, who plays No. 1 singles for Salisbury during the regular season. “This year our doubles strategy was very different coming into it. We were able to play off each other’s strength more instead of playing like two singles players on a doubles court.”

They earned a No. 6 seed this season and opened the tournament last Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-0 win in the first round. They followed that with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the second round to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round where they met the tournament’s No. 3 seed.

In a match that lasted almost three hours, Roekler and Crouthamel came out with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory to earn a spot in the semifinals.

“We were just really in the zone and everything was flowing,” said Roelker. “It was a rough start but we finished well and that’s what counts.”

While the two players enjoy their roles as the Falcons top singles players, they also look forward to teaming up for districts each season.

“I really look forward to it because singles is so hard because it’s only yourself,” said Crouthamel, the team’s No. 2 singles player. “It’s fun to have a partner there to support you.”

But it does have its challenges. Neither player works on doubles much during the season as they’re both playing two or three singles matches each week.

“It’s hard because we only play doubles once a year together so we only have a week to get ready,” said Crouthamel. “We practice with some of Leandra’s friends that she plays with at Winning Touch. That kind of prepared us to come out and play our best.”

The Falcon twosome lost its semifinal match to the No. 2 seed, Bethlehem Cahtolic’s Brenna Magliochetti and Molley Ehrig, 6-0, 6-4.

But Roelker and Crouthamel plan to be right back in the same position next year when they plan to go at least one step further.

“Every year we make it one more round further so we did it again,” said Roelker. “But we’re hoping to get as far as we can.”
