LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Northwestern Recreation Commission member LeRoy Sorensen told those attending the commission’s September meeting he doesn’t think people in the community know what is involved with putting together the annual Night in the Country celebration.

“It wouldn’t exist without you,” he said, as he presented ‘Night’ organizer Kathy Hermany a gift certificate as a token of appreciation.

Hermany reported a new “Night” banner is needed for the entrance and it should be placed higher because a truck tore the old banner.

Jim Hughes, maintenance, reported to the commissioner new basketball nets were installed, and Northwestern Lehigh School District Activities Director Jason Zimmerman ordered new volleyball nets.

Commission members then discussed the batting cage behind the concession stand.

Two days will be needed to dig it out. The area will be filled with screenings and the batter’s box will be covered with mats supplied by Don Link.

Cost to excavate will be $80 an hour and the cost cannot exceed $1,300.

The removed dirt will be kept in the park. Silt fencing will be used to prevent erosion.

Todd Leiser asked about getting a long-term plan for the park.

Sorensen said the number of volunteers has decreased. He did some work on the fields some years back with minimal pay compared to what commercial people wanted.

Leiser said Field No. 7 needs attention.

NYAA soccer director Dan Terrell said they are trying to do it a little at a time.

Zimmerman said the school has a top dressing machine, which puts down less than an eighth of an inch and enriches poor soil.

Sorensen suggested they devise a plan with details.

“I want to see things get done,” he said.

Leiser asked if NYAA could use lights for evening practice, until 8:30 p.m., as they have in previous years.

The board gave approval to the request.
