Alburtis Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 trains two new volunteers

Emmaus High School students Damian Nemeth and Matthew Molcham are recent volunteer firefighters in training with Alburtis Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1.

Nemeth, who lives with his family in Macungie, is a high school senior with plans to attend college for engineering. He also plans to stick with firefighting.

Nemeth’s uncle Matt Nemeth was a fire chief at New Tripoli.

Nemeth volunteered because he wanted something to do and to be able to help in the community. He likes the physical, hands-on things firefighters are trained to do. Nemeth really likes firefighting.

“I enjoyed going to Mack South Allentown Ambulance Corps for lifting busses and planes. It was fun. There is nothing I do not like about firefighting,” Nemeth said.

The most memorable event he experienced so far was his first fire scene near Emmaus High School.

Nemeth’s advice to anyone interested in firefighting is to do it. Join a local community fire company to help out.

Molcham, lives with his family in Alburtis. His future plans are to attend college for two years and then become a Navy Seal. He is not sure how long he will be able to stay with firefighting but he does like it. He dislikes not getting to go on very many calls.

Molcham volunteered to be a firefighter in April because, “It looked interesting and I wanted to do something else besides sit at home,” Molcham said.

He is the first in his family to be a firefighter.

Molcham likes learning everything about firefighting he is being trained to do but finds it difficult to remember everything, especially where things are on the fire truck.

To anyone thinking about volunteering to be a firefighter his advice would be,

“Try it out and see if you like it,” Molcham said.
