Single trash hauler considered

Upper Milford Supervisor Robert Sentner suggested to the board at last week’s meeting they consider going to a single trash hauler system for the township, instead of residents contracting for their own trash pickup.

Sentner said now there is “a parade of different garbage trucks all day long” which are destroying the township roads.

“If we go to one hauler, they’re going to sneak the price up,” Supervisor Daniel Mohr warned.

But Sentner disagreed. He said the Environmental Advisory Council looked into the issue a few years ago and found the average household would have saved about $100 a year at the time.

Audience member Francis Caputo agreed with Sentner. He said his development, Mink Estates, has contracted with a single hauler and they get a cheaper rate because the hauler can service so many homes in one area.

Township Manager Daniel DeLong said if supervisors want to go in this direction, the township would have to go out for bids. Right now, he said, there are 11 trash haulers serving township residents and it’s a challenge to get accurate reporting on what they pick up.

DeLong noted there was an informal referendum of township residents on the issue a few years ago and the results were pretty close.

Sentner and George DeVault, chairman, asked DeLong to get more information.
