Eagle Scout’s Franko Farm project approved

An Eagle Scout project to replace a split-rail fence along Black River Road at Franko Farm Park has been given the go-ahead by the Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners.

“The entrance is unappealing,” Ka Seng Lim of Boy Scouts of America Troop 58 said at the Sept. 10 commissioners’ meeting. His project also includes refurbishing the gazebo at the pond in Franko.

“The pond gazebo needs paint. There’s some vandalism. A portion of the rail is missing,” Lim said.

Commissioners voted unanimously 5-0 to approve funds for materials for the project. Commissioner Vice President Debra Brinton made the motion, seconded by Commissioner Robert Martucci, Jr.

In his PowerPoint presentation, “Franko Farm Recreation Area Eagle Project,” Lim showed photographs of what he said are broken split rails and some missing rails and posts in the fence along Franko, which fronts Black River. He said his project would remove old posts, put in new posts and insert new rails. He listed costs for tools and lumber.

Among materials listed are four end posts, 40 posts and 120 11-foot-long rails.

The cost of lumber for the fence is $1,667.48. Cost of gazebo repairs is $186.74, The project cost is $1,848.22.

“It’s a pretty ambitious project,” Martucci said.

“I’m sure we’re going to be involved,” John Andreas, Salisbury Township director of Public Works, said.

“Covering the materials is something we’ve done in the past,” Andreas said, referring to previous Eagle Scout township projects.

Commissioner President James A Brown asked about the project timetable.

“I’d like to get it done before winter,” Lim said.

“We’re going to give you as much time as possible,” Brinton said.

“The physical repairs to the railing are already being addressed,” Andreas said of the gazebo.

“Mr. Martucci is especially happy with this project because he’s been looking at that fence for some time,” Brown said of Franko.

Lim, a Lehigh Valley Academy Regional Charter School senior, is a son of Hock Kim Lim and Sien Cheng Lim.

Troop 58 is based at Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, Emmaus Avenue.
