After months of driving, weeks of setting cones to practice parallel parking practice and waiting in long lines at the DMV to practice in their parallel parking setup, Caroline was finally ready to take her driving test. We arrived Aug. 25 and, with my fingers crossed, I turned Caroline over to the man conducting the test. The first part of the test is parallel parking and I held my breath while watching Caroline navigate the car between the pylons. After that they drove off and I waited impatiently for them to return. Finally they pulled up in front of me, the tester got out of the car and Caroline drove off by herself to park the car.

At that point I knew she had passed the test, but I still wasn’t sure how to answer the tester when he asked, “Did you teach her how to drive?” Not knowing how Caroline had done on the test, I thought “uh-oh” and hesitantly replied, “My husband and I did.”

He surprised me when he said, “Well, you did a great job. She’s one of the best drivers I’ve tested in a long time.” Way to go, Caroline!

The next township column will be published Oct. 21; copy deadline is Oct. 15.
