Historical Society plans event
The celebration for the Emmaus Historical Society’s new museum at 218 Main St. will be noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 12 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 13.
The program includes a town crier and Emmaus proclamations, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, museum tours and a musical performance by the Emmaus Brass Choir. There will be a display of Emmaus artifacts from visiting regional societies. A celebration cake will be served 3 p.m. Sept. 12 and an ice cream social 1 p.m. Sept. 13. While supplies last, two special souvenir mementos will be given to visitors during the weekend.
The new museum will be open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and beginning Sept. 20, will also be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. For information, call 610-966-6591.
The monthly meeting for the society will be 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. The program is “Emmaus’ 1959 Centennial.”
The Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., will host its annual Community Heroes Day 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 10. The event provides an opportunity for youngsters to meet community heroes and climb on a fire truck, look inside an ambulance and sit in a police car.
Prior to the library’s hero’s day celebration 5 p.m., the Emmaus Commemorative Gardens Foundation will dedicate its special walkway to honor local community heroes with a brick installation ceremony at the Remembrance Garden at Knauss Homestead, 164 E. Main St. (rear).
The library will be closed Sept. 4, 5 and 7 for the Labor Day holiday.
There still may be space available in the Pennsylvania German classes the library is hosting so if interested, call to see if there are any openings. Pre-registration closed Aug. 24. The September children’s programs at the library include: 2 p.m. Sept. 12, Fun Family Films; 7 p.m. Sept. 17, Teen Read for grades ninth through 12th; 6:45 to 8 p.m. Sept. 24, Books and Barks; 10:30 a.m. Sept. 29 Stars story-time (preschool ages); 10:30 a.m. Sept. 30 Suns story-time (toddlers accompanied by an adult). There will be an after-school block party for all ages 4 p.m. Sept. 29 in the community room.

The Emmaus Main Street Partners will host its annual Farewell to Summer Festival in the downtown area 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 19. The event features kids’ activities, cupcake, hot dog and banana split eating contests, an appearance by Ronald McDonald, a beer tent, food, prizes, music and other entertainment. Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. Sept. 8 and 21 in council chambers, 28 S. Fourth St. The borough offices and compost center will be closed Sept. 7 for the Labor Day holiday. The compost center is open 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays until Sept. 21. From Sept. 23 to Oct. 24, it is open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Emmaus’ community-wide yard sale will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 with a raindate of Sept. 13.
Hours for the Emmaus Community Park pool are 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 24 to Aug. 30; 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 4 to Sept. 6 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 (Labor Day).
The Red Hill Band will perform 6 p.m. Aug. 30 in the Emmaus Community Arts Pavilion.
Plans are underway for the annual Halloween parade and 5K race scheduled Oct. 17. The parade committee welcomes volunteers. You are invited to join the parade committee at their weekly meetings at borough hall 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 10 and every Thursday until the week of the parade.
Emmaus’ Farmers Market in the KNBT parking lot, 235 Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. The program for the Emmaus Garden Club’s Sept. 1 meeting is “The Plants & Herbs of Shakespeare” by Rexine Krause, co-owner of Countryside Farm & Greenhouse in Fleetwood. The club meets noon for social time with the program beginning 12:30 p.m. followed by a business meeting 1:30 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 3002 N. Second St.

The GFWCPA Woman’s Club of Emmaus meets monthly 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St. The public is invited to attend. The programs for the rest of the year will reflect the club’s 75 years of service to the community. The Friends of the 1803 House is still accepting applications for crafters for its Oct. 3 fundraiser, “A Very Merrie Halloween.” This family-oriented fall and Halloween festival and juried craft show will be held on the grounds of the historic 1803 House, 55 S. Keystone Ave. The event features tours of the historic house, children’s activities and a costumed Halloween parade. Pulled pork sandwiches and other baked goods will be available for purchase.
