Greenwich Twp woman dies in crash

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim says Heather A. Delp, 39, died from multiple blunt force injuries due to a motor vehicle accident with a tractor trailer just before 3:30 p.m. Aug. 14 on I-78 Weisenberg Township.

Delp, of 7 Dunkels Church Road, Greenwich Township, was pronounced by Lehigh County Deputy Coroner Jason Nicholas pronounced dead at 4:43 p.m. that day, Grim said.

He said he ruled the manner of her death an accident.

According to State Police Troop M Fogelsville, Delp was driving a 2006 Jeep Commander which struck a 2001 Mack truck tractor driven by Kenneth Glen Gaugler, 57, of Allentown.

The truck tractor hauling a Wabash-National trailer.

Police say the truck and trailer was eastbound on I-78 in the right lane.

The Jeep was traveling directly behind it.

As the truck and trailer combo was slowing or coming to a stop in the right lane due to a backlog of traffic, Delp allegedly failed to come to a stop and her Jeep struck the rear passenger side corner of the trailer with its front, driver's side bumper.

The Jeep came to a final rest in the right eastbound lane of I-78 facing east. The truck and trailer came to a final rest on the south berm, facing east, police say.

Passengers in the Jeep, two 9-year-old boys and two 9-year-old girls, all from Kutztown, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

Gaugler was uninjured in the crash, police say.

The Jeep sustained heavy front end damage. The trailer sustained moderate rear end damage.

Weisenberg Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
