Emmaus Public Library's summer reading program, Every Hero Has a Story, allows young readers to win prizes for reading and to interact with local heroes.
This season's presenters have included George DeVault, author of "Fire Call!," Bob McLeod, artist and illustrator of "The Superhero ABC" and Cindy Schmaldinst, lecturer on local food pantries and how to be an at-home hero helping others in the community.
Most recently, the library hosted the Bethlehem Mounted Police.
Officers John Buskirk, Mike Leaser and Jason Holschwander accompanied by their mounts George, Pharaoh and Raven, respectively, addressed a crowd of approximately 70 children and adults.
The officers indicated their main duties are patrol and community relations. In addition, they discussed the unique qualities of horses, their work routine and the daily maintenance of George, Pharaoh and Raven.
Buskirk explained the most important quality of a horse involved in police work is the appropriate temperament. The animal must remain calm despite distractions and bond with its rider.
"We get to know them," Buskirk said. "They get to know us."
After responding to questions, the officers closed the session by permitting audience members to gently pet the horses.
