Driver involved in Lowhill crash dies in hospital

An 83-year-old Lowhill Township woman has died nine days after she was involved in a crash with another vehicle around 2 p.m. July 30 on Route 100, Lowhill Township.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said Christine R. Karom, of 2766 Route 100, was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

The cause of her death was attributed to blunt force injuries, Grim said.

He ruled the manner of her death an accident.

According to State Police Troop M Fogelsville, Karom was driving a 2004 Ford F150 north on Route 100 when her truck struck a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix driven southbound on Route 100, just south of Beechwood Street, by Todd G. Fatzinger, 50, of Walnutport.

The roadway was wet and it was actively raining, police say.

Police say Karom was attempting to negotiate a right curve and Fatzinger was negotiating a left curve, when the pickup left its lane of travel on the left side and struck the car's left side with its left side.

The pickup came to a final rest in the northbound lane facing in a southwest direction. The car came to a final rest in the southbound lane facing in an east direction, police say.

Police say Karom and Fatzinger, who were not wearing seat belts, sustained major injuries.

They were transported by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to the hospital.

Karom was charged with a traffic violation, police say.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Stews Tire Center.

Upper Macungie Township police and fire departments along with Troopers Curt Shillinger and Ahmad Norman and Cpl. Jon Eckhart assisted at the scene.
