Residents asked to adopt a tree

Much of the July 29 meeting of the Northwestern Recreation Commission was spent on planning the walking trail and the planting of 77 trees.

The trees will be placed to provide the most shade for those who come to watch the ball games or use the playground. Each tree will cost $300.

As the total cost will be $23,000, the rec commission and Northwestern Youth Athletic Association are asking people to adopt a tree by donating the full cost, or to adopt half a tree or any amount.

Each donation toward the cost of a tree will be permanently recognized. The manner was not finalized at this meeting.

The trees are on a five-year plan but with enough help the rec commission said it can finish in two years.

A variety of trees will be planted 30-feet apart and are expected to fill a 60-foot space at maturity.

The NYAA will add the Adopt-a-Tree program to its website, according to Rob Serulnek.

If the walking trail follows outlines laid out, the rec commission wants to pave a half-mile and eventually more.

The entire section that has been laid out is one mile. Plans at this point are flexible but the paving would be at least six-feet wide – wide enough for walkers, walkers with strollers, bikers or roller skaters to pass each other comfortably.

Rec commission member Justin Smith will check if there are any township requirements to building a trail.
