Heidelberg board in quandary as to which ambulance corps responds

Heidelberg Township supervisors are trying to resolve the lack of certainty in emergency service response to Northwestern Lehigh School District.

Northwestern Ambulance Corps served as the area's emergency medical responder for 43 years. Since the that corps' closure Jan. 18, Northwestern Leigh townships had to choose new emergency medical services.

As neighboring townships, Lynn and Heidelberg went with different service providers, the official word on which emergency service provider is responsible for the school district remains unclear.

Although the high school and middle school components of the campus reside in Heidelberg, the elementary school is bisected by the Lynn and Heidelberg township line.

Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services representative Mark Smith warned supervisors at the July 16 meeting the ambiguity of the emergency response territory is dangerous.

Smith said in the event of an emergency, callers don't always know their exact location and a mistake in dispatch could delay response time.

"It is a classic example of how politics get involved in public safety," Smith said.

At the May 21 meeting, Supervisor David Fink reported a letter was sent to Dan Bellesfield at Lehigh County 911 Communications Center stating as the taxing jurisdiction for the school district campus along Route 309 is Heidelberg Township, NOVA would be the primary ambulance service.

However, as supervisors have not received a return letter from Bellesfield, Smith told supervisors no news does not always mean good news.

In other matters, Chairman Steve Bachman recognized the success of the Goodwill Fire Company's 100 anniversary celebration July 11.

He said although he did not have an official number of attendees, an estimated 300 spectators lined the township's streets for the parade.

"The fireworks were absolutely astonishing," Bachman said.
