'Rehab in Motion Day' at Good Shepherd Center

Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network hosts "Rehab in Motion Day," 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Aug. 8, at its Allentown Health and Technology Center, 850 S. Fifth St., Allentown.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will highlight the many opportunities people with disabilities have to participate in sports and lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

"Our mission at Good Shepherd is to support the whole person," said Frank Hyland, Vice President, Rehabilitation. "We have a vast array of therapies at our disposal to support the patient's physical well-being, but we look beyond that to help them enjoy healthy, active lives. Rehab in Motion gives people with disabilities the chance to explore recreational activities they enjoy."

During the event, several local sporting and recreation organizations will exhibit the use of adaptive technology. Adaptive technology is the use of any item or system designed to increase the capabilities of people with disabilities.

Exhibitors include Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays, Leaser Lake boating and fishing, Miracle League baseball for children, Dyn Access ski-sit ski as well as adaptive golf and a golf cart. The Freewheelers from the Lehigh Valley Center for Independent Living (LVCIL), a nonprofit sports organization for disabled athletes, will demonstrate wheelchair basketball.

Attendees will also see demonstrations of Permobil's motorized wheelchairs as well as braces and prosthetics by Boas and VPO. Free glucose and cholesterol screening will be offered by Health Network Labs, and Metz will provide recipes and healthy cooking techniques. Good Shepherd's fitness, aquatics and karate programs also will be demonstrated.

Free food and parking is available for the event.
