alburtis Borough Council
The Alburtis Borough Council held its regular meeting on July 29. Several items were discussed. The Emmaus Rotary Club presented the Borough with a donation of $1,798 to be used towards a batting cage net at School and Walnut streets. Resident Mark Erlke, who recently completed his term as president of the Rotary Club, attended the meeting to present the check to council.
Council unanimously approved the appointment of Chris DeFrain as the borough's financial consultant. DeFrain is a member of the American Institution of Certified Public Accountants and a former member of the Emmaus Parks and Recreation Department and the Emmaus Youth Association. He previously served on Emmaus Borough Council and is campaigning to reclaim his seat after a hiatus. DeFrain is the current Chief Financial Officer of Lehigh Valley Restaurant Group, which owns and operates 21 Red Robin locations throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania.
The borough is searching for a new generator for borough hall following tumultuous weather this past year. There was debate among council members as to the kilowatt output necessary for the new generator. The present generator is currently operational, but only powers half of the building in emergency situations. While the police department's equipment continues to operate, the municipal office's equipment is not powered by the generator.
"This is the building where if something happens people are going to come to," said Council president Steven Hill, "For shelter, for whatever."
The renovation continues along Third Street between Main and Walnut streets. Council has approved Rota-Mill, Inc. as a contractor for milling work after receiving an estimate last week. All work is expected to be completed in a one day operation. Curbing is already underway along Third Street. No definite time table has been set regarding the milling, but is expected to take place by the beginning of September.
Council also passed a resolution, supporting by the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs, to support the right to use medical cannabis.
