Bank robbed, suspect caught on I-78, New Smithville

A 60-year-old man was taken into custody by police after allegedly robbing First Niagara Bank, 6890 Hamilton Blvd., Upper Macungie Township, at 10:52 a.m. July 17, Upper Macungie Township Police say.

According to an affidavit of probable cause obtained Monday from District Judge Michael Faulk-ner's office, Upper Macungie Township Police Detective Darren Simmers says officers responded to the bank for an armed robbery that had just occurred.

Simmers states a white male wearing a fake beard, gloves and glasses with a fishing hat, later identified as David Lee Parks of Conn., had just left on foot, after allegedly entering the bank, lifting his shirt, displaying what appeared to be a firearm and demanding cash from a teller before fleeing the building out a side entrance.

Simmers stated in the affidavit UMTPD units were advised by outside sources Parksfled the parking lot in a black Dodge Neon with Connecticut registration.

The car was stopped on I-78 westbound at the Lynn-port-New Smithville exit by Upper Macungie Township Police Officer William Rohrbach.

A search of the car revealed the fake beard, gloves, glasses and fishing hat, Simmers states.

According to Simmers in the affidavit, money matching that which was stolen during the robbery, the replica firearm and marijuana with pipe, rolling papers and metal scissors were also recovered in the car.

Simmers states Parks was Mirandized and interviewed. He allegedly admitted robbing First Niagara Bank.

Parks does not have a valid driver's license, Simmers states in the affidavit.

According to a police report received July 20, Simmers states prior to charges being filed, Parks requested to speak to detectives and the FBI again about other robberies.

Parks allegedly then confirmed by viewing surveillance photos and news articles, he was responsible for five other robberies: two in Scranton, two in Rhode Island and one in New Jersey, all of which occurred since February 2015.

Simmers states based upon the investigation conducted, Parks was charged with robbery, theft by unlawful taking, theft by extortion, receiving stolen property, simple assault, possessing instruments of a crime, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and driver's required to be licensed.

Parks was taken before District Judge Michael Faulkner for his preliminary arraignment and was committed to Lehigh County Prison in lieu of $250,000 cash bail.

There were no injuries as a result of the robbery, Simmers states.

Pennsylvania State Police and the FBI assisted with the investigation.
