Alburtis Borough Council
The Alburtis Borough Council held its regular meeting July 8 in which the council joined a coalition of local boroughs in support of Pennsylvania Senate Bill 3 of the Legalization of Medical Cannabis in Pennsylvania.
The resolution is not legally binding, but merely indicates the borough's support for the use of cannabis strictly for medicinal use.
Senate Bill 3 was passed by the Pennsylvania Senate by a vote of 40 to 7 and is currently sitting in the health committee of the Pennsylvania House.
Council also addressed concerns raised by residents regarding the hockey rink off Cobblestone Court. Residents have suggested police enforcement of the time restrictions of the hockey rink is a poor allocation of borough resources.
Council has optioned installing cameras on select government buildings, but has presently deemed the equipment cost-prohibitive.
The borough council recently received a $1,600 grant as part of its Main Street Initiatives Grant. The money will be allocated to public banners spanning Main Street.
Borough Manager Sharon Trexler is also currently seeking a grant from "Fresh Paint Days Pennsylvania," as part of the "Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful" initiative. The grant is provided by Glidden Professional and Home Depot. Applicants are eligible for up to 20 gallons of exterior paint, but only one building per application is allowed. The paint would be designated for Lockridge Historical Church. The borough is seeking a number of renovations to the church, including a new boiler.
As discussed at the council's previous meeting, residents along Ridgeview Drive will be permitted to relocate their mailboxes to the opposite side of the street where parking is not permitted.
The move of the boxes will be at the expense of the residents. While there is no formal ordinance, the removal and relocation of select mailboxes has the full support of both the borough council and the United States Postal Service.
J.P. Mascaro and Sons recently donated $500 to the 2015 Summer Crime Prevention Programs. A portion of the proceeds were allocated to the luau event held July 11.
