Color Run to benefit PTO

Tanya Smargiassi from the Northwestern Lehigh Middle School PTO attended the June 24 meeting of the Northwestern Recreation Commission.

She presented a facilities request for use of the fields on Sept. 27 or any available date near that time.

The event is a non-timed Color Run in which the runners wear white shirts and are splattered with color along the route.

Fire police will be asked to help. The event is to be a PTO fundraiser.

The rec commission approved the request.

Age 19-plus softball requested field use in July and August.

The recreation commission board approved the use with the exception of Night in the Country weekend.

Night in the Country Chair Kathy Hermany said the school drama club wanted to sing while the band is on break during Night in the Country.

That request was also approved.

All organizations that help have been lined up. The American Cancer Society will again man the gate.

Forgotten Felines and Fidos animal shelter volunteers will pick up trash.

Northwestern Lehigh cheerleaders will handle the Chinese auction and Cub Scouts will do the day-after trash pickup.

The Science Team will be in charge of the car cruise.

Nestlé Waters has made a $500 donation.

Hermany said tents will need to be rented as the previous supplier has gone out of business.

Constables will handle security and there will be firefighter games and the MedEvac helicopter will make a landing.

Hermany said many people entered before 4 p.m. and more are coming earlier to get in.

Passes will be given to Night workers. They have to be turned in at the gate so there is no free entry before 4 p.m. except with passes.

There has been a problem with Waste Management not emptying the Dumpster.

When Waste Management was called, the person apparently said the Dumpster had been emptied. Recreation Commission President Don Link will call to be sure the schedule is put on the Waste Management driver's computer.

There apparently has been no response from state Rep. Gary Day, R-187th, about the crosswalk-light issue on Northwest Road.

The school district said it will bus its people over.

Attorney Keith Strohl said there is a good reason for lowering the speed limit – the safety of kids – though PennDOT bases its decision to not take action on speed and crash records.

Letters will be written to PennDOT, representatives in Harrisburg and Gary Knowles of the transportation committee stressing safety as an important matter. If the speed limit is lowered to 35 mph, crosswalks can be painted on the roadway.

The rec commission bylaws committee said it had talked and will have recommendations by the July meeting.

Frank Chukoskie asked if any decision had been made about the Northwestern Youth Athletic Association having sports camps on the fields.

Link said the final decision would not be damaging to the NYAA.

Strohl had said they need to form a policy on field use rather than have it in the bylaws.

The NYAA wants reimbursement for something such as lime, used by outside field teams, when they play.

Lime markings often last for just two games and have to be redone.
