Slutsky keys victory over Wilson
Salisbury met Wilson three times during last winter's high school boys basketball season. The Falcons won all three meetings, including a 30-point romp in the District 11 playoffs.
The two teams met once again last Thursday in the Stellar Construction Summer League, and the Falcons once again found a way to come out on top.
Behind a team-high 19 points from Ryan Slutsky, the Falcons built a 13-point lead by halftime and hung on to down the Warriors, 58-47, at Allen High School. Jaxon Costello scored 14 points. Dylan Belletiere added 12 and Blake Jones tallied 11 in the victory.
"I think we played really good," Slutsky said. "We ran our sets very well, and we shared the ball really well. We got out on the break."
After Costello scored the first eight points of the half to give Salisbury an early 8-7 lead, the Falcons went on a run to separate themselves for the remainder of the contest.
Salisbury went on a 13-4 sprint, capped by Slutsky's three-pointer from the left wing that gave the Falcons their first double-digit lead at 21-11.
Wilson got to within seven points moments later, but two straight field goals from Salisbury gave the Falcons some more breathing room. Jones' three-pointer made it 30-18, and that lead grew to 36-20 moments later.
Wilson cut its deficit to 43-36 early in the second half, but it was Slutsky who had an answer on the next possession. His three-pointer pushed Salisbury's lead back to double digits, and another Slutsky basket made it 48-36 the next time down the court.
While Costello provides a nice addition to the Falcons in the post, Slutsky uses his height to a different advantage. He's a gifted shooter from the outside that compliments Costello's game well.
"I've been working on my game," Slutsky said, "trying to get in better shape, and work on my jumping ability, stuff like that."
Another gifted shooter for the Falcons this offseason has been Jones, who hit one three-pointer against the Warriors. Contrary to Belletiere, who scores many of his points by creating offense and driving to the basket, Jones is a knock-down shooter who can stretch the floor for head coach Jason Weaver's group.
Jeff Cooper led the Warriors with 21 and hit five three-pointers to keep Wilson within striking distance.
Results from Tuesday's game against Lehighton were not available at time of press. The Falcons face Phillipsburg on Thursday at 8 p.m. on Cedar Beach's Court 3 before the playoffs begin.
