Chipmunk's garden adventures continue in release of new book

New Ringgold resident Kathy M. Miller is an award-winning nature photographer, author, teacher and cellist.

And, she successfully uses these talents in her "Chippy Chipmunk" series of children's books.

Chippy, Miller's resident chipmunk, has managed to scurry his way into three books chronicling the life of a chipmunk and other backyard friends.

Miller uses her talent as a photographer to capture extraordinary, full-color photographs of the animals and their habitats.

She goes to great lengths and takes many photos to ensure she has the best shot.

Although she was not able to snap a photo of a certain owl during a photo shoot in Canada, she spotted one on her drive home, and jumped at the chance.

Chippy is introduced in the first book in the series, "Chippy Chipmunk: Parties in the Garden."

Through 80-plus color photos and text, Miller depicts the antics of Chippy as he explores the author's garden.

A sequel, "Babies in the Garden," captures chipmunk babies as they make their way out into the world.

The most recent addition, "Friends in the Garden," takes a more serious tone, as Chippy mourns the loss of his good friend, Pickle, the meadow vole.

"Loss is a natural part of life but most adults in our society are uncomfortable talking about death," Miller explained.

She consulted other teachers, librarians and counselors to ensure age-appropriate text and themes.

"The book demonstrates ways friends can help friends cope with loss," Miller said. "They offer food, take on daily tasks, offer to play and share, give them gifts, organize a dedication for the friend who died, share memories and stories, and so much more."

Expressive photos, such as the rabbit who looks like he's crying, teach children it's OK to be sad.

Photos of clouds and rainbows help children to "… think beautiful things are sent to us from up beyond the clouds."

Friends, including baby bluebirds, are depicted gathering at the bear, a wooden creation by a chainsaw carving artist, to share funny stories and smile at happy memories.

The book also contains an activity page, notes to parents and educators, and fun facts about the wildlife.

"It can be used as a wonderful classroom teaching tool," Miller said.

Finally, Miller's talents as a musician are obvious in her creativity, patience and passion for her books and photography.

She has presented multimedia nature programs to numerous nature centers, libraries and schools across North America.

They include aural and visual components about backyard nature as well as tips on photography.

In addition to the images found in her books, Miller's photographs have been published in greeting cards, magazines, newspapers and brochures.
