"What the American Flag Means to Me"
First Place Award
Jaxsen Miller, St. Ann School
Parent: Kristen Szvetecz
When I see the flag on the pole so high,
It gives me a sensation that is hard to describe.
Red, white, and blue I see,
And think about what the flag means to me.
I think about the heroes that fought,
Freedom they wanted, freedom they got.
We made a flag that waves high today,
From Washington D.C. to the San Francisco Bay.
The flag fills me with joy in such a way,
That I hope my feelings will be passed on someday.
The joy it brings, and also much pride,
Makes me think of our people that died.
So this is what I think of the American flag,
A symbol so great, it's hard not to brag.
Second Place Award

Our country,
our freedom,
our American flag.
The flag waves
through the wind,
whispering stories
of our brave men and women.
Red.
The blood shed of fallen American soldiers.
White.
The color of peace we have fought for.
Blue.
The loyalty and trust in our soldiers.
Its colors tell our story.
Like a fire, burning with pride,
it waves through the night,
letting our freedom shine.
Our country,
our freedom,
our American flag.
Third Place Award
Jenna Villeneuve, Shoemaker Elementary School
Parents: John and Deborah Villeneuve
When I look at the flag what do I see?
A symbol of the world's greatest country.
I think of those who gave it all
and bravely faced the cannon ball.
I look upon the flag with pride
and know that freedom is on our side.
When the flag is in my sights
I remember all the perilous fights.
The thought of soldiers warms my heart
because they all did their part.
I remember those who are now dead
so I can sleep safely in my bed.
