CAMP GEIGER
On June 13 and 14, Friends of Camp Geiger will sponsor the eighth annual Lehigh Valley Civil War Days at the Whitehall Parkway Recreational Area on Church Street in Whitehall.
Saturday's activities begin at 9 a.m. To commemorate the closing days of the Civil War, the battles at Fort Stedman and Appomattox, which took place in the spring of 1865, will be featured.
Fort Stedman will be reenacted on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. Appomattox will be reenacted on Sunday at 1:45 p.m. A battlefield lecture will precede each battle.
Trench battles demonstrating the changing face of war will also be held each day, along with behind-the-scenes tours of the trenches during breaks in the fighting.
Confederate and Union camps will be set up to depict military life during the war. The U. S. Sanitary Commission, children's games, parlor pastimes, a children's recruiting station, period laundress and a field hospital will be among the many offerings held daily on the historic street. Lectures by General Grant, Clara Barton and Jason Wilson, director of the PA Flag Project to preserve the state's Civil War battle flags, a Victorian fashion show and period music will be offered.
The Singing Sons of Northampton and the Calvert Arms Fife and Drum Corps will perform at a twilight concert on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Weather permitting, an artillery night firing is planned after the concert. The event closes Sunday at 3 p.m.
Admission is free for spectators. Donations to benefit Civil War battlefield preservation will be accepted. Food is available.
Please do not wear period attire or bring weapons to the event unless you are a registered participant.
