High jumper Szita chooses West Chester
Last Thursday was the last day of school for Salisbury seniors.
But for senior Holly Szita, she had another reason to celebrate that date.
Szita, this year's district runner-up and sixth-place finisher at states in the Class AA high jump, was recognized last week after signing her collegiate letter of intent to continue her track and field career at West Chester University.
"I don't know how to describe it," Szita said. "I'm really excited to start that chapter in my life, and I can see a bright future there."
After receiving interest from Lehigh University, Marywood University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology as a junior, Szita started hearing from the Rams of West Chester as the school year got underway. It wasn't long until she realized West Chester was the best fit for her.
"I always look into every school that I get a letter from," Szita said. "West Chester just seemed so nice.
"I kind of ruled out Lehigh right away because they didn't have my program, which is nutrition. And then Marywood had my program, but being a Division III school they couldn't offer anything. And then I went to West Chester."
Not only does West Chester offer a solid nutrition program on the academics side, the athletics was just as enticing for Szita.
"After I visited all of the schools, it became pretty clear to me which was my best fit," Szita said. "After being there I felt comfortable
"The [head] coach [Jason Kiglore] really jumped out because he seemed really nice. I really liked his personality, and I could tell he was super passionate about track. I'm the same way so I think our personalities will mesh well."
Szita took two visits to West Chester, the first coming at the end of 2014. When she went back for an official visit at the end of January, she got to experience exactly what it was like to be a Ram.
"I got to meet a girl on the team, and she showed me all of her classes," Szita said. "She was honestly one of the nicest people I have met. Meeting the team, they were really friendly and welcoming, so I felt comfortable. They made me feel like I was already a part of the team even though I didn't know any of them."
Szita isn't the first Falcon to continue their track and field career at West Chester. Austin Uhl, a medalist at last year's state meet, was a freshman this season. And Alex Foulke, a senior for the Rams and 2011 graduate of Salisbury, has cemented himself as one of the top sprinters in school history. Szita can now add her name to that list.
Szita plans to major in nutrition.
"I've always been interested in it [nutrition] and I love sports," Szita said. "They go hand-in-hand, diet and exercise. Since I'm already pretty knowledgeable in the exercise part, I wanted to learn more about the other half."
Her parents are Bob and Kelly Szita.
