Turnpike needs to buy land

Washington Township Supervisor Josh Friebolin said at the May 5 supervisors' meeting, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission needs to buy land to provide an entrance for Trumbull Corp., which is doing the Pa. Turnpike's Emerald bridge replacement.

He said an appraisal is being done for one-half acre. Friebolin was given authority to execute the sale after Solicitor John Ashley checks the papers.

The new Zoning Officer-Township Manager Todd Weidman was introduced.

He is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in geography and is certified in community planning, geography and topography.

He worked 12 years with a county government in Maryland and recently moved back to this area.

Weidman started work a week before the meeting.

In other matters, resident Joyce Lesher thanked supervisors for putting in guide rails near her home. Lesher said she has seen vehicles spin out but not one has hit her mobile home along Route 873 since the rails were installed.

An agreement was approved with Creditech, a division of Berkheimer Associates, for collecting overdue fees for fire hydrants and street lights. The client will pay the collection costs, not the township.

Citizens Fire Company, Slatedale, requested its annual donation.

The fire company has turned in all financial forms for 2014. The amount is $5,000 for its annual donation, $15,000 for the truck fund and $10,000 from a previous fund.

Resident Ed Zeigler said the Northern Lehigh community center should move forward even if Walnutport decided against it. He has $100,000 of his own money involved with it. Zeigler said the sewer authority is for Slatington, Walnutport and Washington.

Sludge has needed to be hauled away.

Zeigler said that is because the treatment plant is not working properly because there is grit in the pump.

The plant pumps 350 gallons per minute instead of the 1,000 gallons it should, allowing raw sewage to run into the Lehigh River.
