Dorothy J. Shideman
Dorothy J. Shideman, 86, of Whitehall, formerly of Clearwater, Fla., died peacefully May 21, 2015.
She and her husband George E. Shideman were married 50 years at the time of his death on March 23, 2005.
Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late John Russell and Viola (Roberts) Harris.
A 1945 graduate of Frankford High School, Philadelphia, she attended Temple University and Palmer School, both in Philadelphia, and Emory University, Atlanta, Ga.
She was secretary for First Presbyterian Church and the U.S. Air Force, Selfridge Air Force Base, both in Mt. Clemens, Mich; Furchgott's and Jacksonville Blow Pipe Company, both in Jacksonville, Fla; American Viscose Corporation and Temple University, both in Philadelphia; Clearwater Police Department and Trinity Presbyterian Church, both in Clearwater; St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Largo, Fla., and a clerk-typist for Keystone Readers Service and Insurance Company of North America, both in Philadelphia, and a part-time cashier for Winn Dixie Stories Inc., Largo, Fla., before retiring in 2001.
An active member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha National Panhellenic Council, she was a Girl Scout leader for many years.
She also assisted for many years playing the piano for contestants participating in the Clearwater Miss pageants.
She loved attending church and its functions, spending time with her family and her best friend Ruth Bataille, traveling, reading books and her Bible, playing bridge with friends, doing crossword puzzles, attending musicals, shows, playing the piano and Dalmatian dogs.
Her survivors include daughters Susan E. Bryant of Whitehall, Janet E. Shideman and her cat, Noah, of Largo; grandsons Thomas R. Bryant Jr., and his wife, Denys, of Bowers, Christopher M. Bryant, of Clearwater; brother John Russell Harris Jr., and his wife, Mary, of Morgantown; several nieces and nephews; and beloved pets Dono Amore, Nasya Shimeka and Hope Faith.
She was predeceased by a sister Alice Springman, brother-in-law Gene Springman and sister-in-law Mary Alice Harris.
A memorial service will take place 10:30 a.m. May 30 at Jordan UCC, 1837 Church Road, South Whitehall, with the Rev. Dr. David Charles Smith officiating.
Friends may pay their respects 10-10:30 a.m. Saturday in the church.
