SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

The curriculum committee of the Salisbury Township School District met May 18 at Harry S Truman Elementary School.

Students demonstrated how they use the iPads in conjunction with the work they are doing in the classroom.

A video was shown with students writing sentences using key works with the Kids Journal app. As the students are writing sentences, the students can add pictures to inspire their creativity.

"I really like it because it isn't boring," one student said in the video.

"I like the iPads because I can learn my site words," another said.

Teachers noted the iPads encourage collaboration and reinforce skills.

Another app had magnetic letters encouraging the students with their spelling words.

Following the demonstration, Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss provided an update on Teaching and Learning 2020.

"We are in our fourth year of 1:1 and the first year of 1:1 in elementary school," Ziegenfuss said.

All goals are listed on the TL2020 website.

Using the Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition Model by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, a way for teachers to evaluate how they are incorporating technology into the instructional practice, the progress update listed goals versus accomplishments.

The first goal of SAMR showed a 15 percent increase in technology use.

The second goal of increased higher order thinking showed an increase in all four levels.

The third goal was the development of online/ blended learning environments. The course Rebls, Robbers and Rogues will be offered as a blended learning course next year. Additional classes developed by teachers can possibly be incorporated into the classrooms next year.

"We offered the online classes to ninth grade students," Salisbury High School Principal Heather Morningstar said. "With the transition to ninth grade, there was some parent and student apprehension." Morningstar said the upper classmen are taking the online class. She also said students like the personal exchange with other students and teachers during traditional classroom time.

"We are re-evaluating the grades we are offering the online courses to," Morningstar said.

The fourth goal showed an increase in the observance of 21st century skills.

Ziegenfuss said the focus for 2015-2016 will be greater systemic change.

"We will be meeting in July as an administrative team to focus on further data analysis and develop building level action plans to ensure continued growth in the TL2020 goal areas," Ziegenfuss said.

"The data showing balance," Board President Russell Giordano said. "To me as long as they have some experience doing work in a normal environment and as long as they are comfortable working in their curriculum, we have served them well. When they go to college there will be no shortage of online and lecture halls.

"I like the way you are approaching this. You are prodding people to dip more than their toe in the water to try it rather than force it. I remember the board hoping this is the way it would happen." Giordano said.

There was a discussion on Keystone testing and the remediation which may be necessary for students to graduate if they do not pass the tests.

A discussion on summer activities include students using the library at the high school due to construction at the elementary schools.

An update was provided on full-day kindergarten. Currently there are 40 students registered at Harry S Truman Elementary School and 27 registered at Western Salisbury Elementary School.

HST Principal Barbara Samide said they expect the numbers to grow over the summer.
