Churches work together on fundraising dinner

People came from near and far to partake in the potpie dinner served at the Kempton Rod and Gun Club.

Jerusalem "Red" Lutheran Church, Friedens Lutheran and New Bethel Union Church began working together at the dinners five years ago to raise money for local charities.

Wayne Luckenbill of Friedens, Shirley Rabert of New Bethel and Marian Fenstermacher of the Red Church represent each of their churches on the fundraising committee, though Luckenbill says Rabert is the brains behind the operation.

They choose a new project each year. This year it will be the food pantry and other groups.

The community contributes, as well as church members who volunteer all the work involved, whether it is making pepper cabbage or homemade noodles for the potpie, or any of the multitude of jobs that keep people returning year after year.

Tim Kleinsmith, a guest this year, said, "All they have to do is find a way to say how good it is."

Dietrich Meats allows the group to use its coolers for storage.

The Rod and Gun Club donates the use of its facility, and members of the churches donate most of the food.

One couple came from Dorneyville, South Whitehall, because they read about the potpie dinner in the Parkland Press.
