NYAA wants to have fundraiser

In the absence of two board members the Northwestern Recreation Commission held over the discussions of the walkaround and the by-laws. The April meeting was held May 6 due to lack of a quorum on April 29.

Frank Chukoski asked if the fields could be used for a fundraiser for two five-day periods. The fundraiser was to be a baseball camp.

Steve Rau of Elite Sports Academy would be in charge of the camp with the NYAA benefiting from the camp financially as well as the 7 to 12-year-old campers by their sports knowledge.

Don Link, rec commission president, said it sounded like a good idea, but there would be a fee of $100 per field used per day since that had been the policy.

Commission Member Justin Smith of Lynn Township said as the fundraiser is for the NYAA, wouldn't that make it a nonprofit. The fee is for profit events.

"We've been good friends with the NYAA but I don't want to drop the fee," said Link. "I just don't see a way to justify it."

Heidelberg Township representative to the commission Steve Bachman said that would be a disservice to the NYAA.

Smith said they should be able to drop the fee as rhe NYAA is nearly a partner in the fields.

The issue will be discussed at the next meeting when the entire board will be available to make a policy change.

Chukoski is not planning anything until early July.

Other requests for use of the facilities include a high school baseball team picnic noon-4 p.m. May 31 and for the annual field days in 2016.

They were both approved.

Kathy Hermany, chair of the Night in the Country Committee, said the National Honor Society and Northwestern Lehigh Science Team will park cars for the cruise.

The American Cancer Society will man the gate; cheerleaders will run the Chinese auction and volunteers withForgotten Felines and Fidos will pick up trash during the event.

Someone or group is still needed to do final cleanup the day after the event.

Pattie Mengel, gym teacher, and her kids picked up trash the last two years and the commission wants to thank them.

Passes were given out to vendors, but if they arrived before 4 p.m. they got in free. The passes were then given to family or friends and people were coming as early as 2 p.m. which got in the way of setup.

"It was chaotic," said Hermany.

The issue will be discussed next month.

A load of infield mix was placed on a pile to be used as needed. The rec commission paid $365 for this first load and, if more is needed, the NYAA will be asked to pay for it.

Jim Hughes, maintenance, said the playgrounds have been mulched and dead branches were pruned from evergreens.

He asked if the horseshoe pits should have sand added.

Hughes said he will be on vacation May 20-29. Substitutes were discussed to handle his work.

Blades of Grass Landscaping was not told about the new field so it was not fertilized or sprayed.

The field will be listed for the next round of treatment.

Telephone poles or something else useful to block cars would be appreciated.
