LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

RACE FOR ADAM FOUNDATION

The weather was perfect for the over 500 runners/walkers participating in the 10th annual 5K Run/Walk for a Cure May 2 at Lehigh Parkway.

All proceeds benefit The Race for Adam Foundation, named for Adam Recke, son of Salisbury Middle School teacher Sean Recke.

As soon as Adam was diagnosed with Niemann-Pick Disease, a rare disease similar to childhood Alzheimer's, fundraising activities began in the Salisbury community to fund research to find a cure.

The event has been organized by SMS teacher Matt Tobias and a friend of Recke family for the last 10 years.

Tobias began by thanking the T-shirt sponsors, contributors, raffle and food sponsors, volunteers and his family.

Tobias then announced this was the last year for him organizing the event citing a familiar saying between Sean Recke and Tobias, "Family Comes First."

To continue raising funds, the event will need a new chairperson and volunteers were asked to consider stepping up to organize the race next year.

As a special gift to commemorate 10 years of fundraising, Cyndi Mugavero and Kari Lessel presented a blanket to the Recke family comprised of 10 years of race T-shirts.

Retired SMS teacher Susan Quigg offered the prayer and the Salisbury High School chorus, under the direction of Rachel Reinecke, offered the national anthem.

Jason Stives, juggler/ magician worked the crowd as did balloon artist Cindy Zona, of Northampton. The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks and the Lehigh Valley Rollergirls also helped with the event.

Members of the Volkswagen club brought some of their cars to Lehigh Parkway and participants could take a chance on many raffle prizes.

Members of the Western Salisbury Fire Department brought their ladder truck and were on site to support the event.

Sean Recke thanked supporters and especially Tobias for his 10 years of work toward finding a cure for Neimann-Pick Disease.

"Adam is in a clinical trial because of you [supporters]," Recke said. "It is amazing in the last 10 years, two clinical trials have started."
