Last week's Colonial League track and field meet figured to be a solid measuring stick for Salisbury senior Kyle Gonoude.

Gonoude, who was dealing with a number of injuries throughout the early portion of the season, has been working his way back to the track over the last couple of weeks. And while he ran in the final two regular season meets, the Colonial League Track and Field Championships provided last year's two-time gold medalist with his toughest competition yet.

Judging by his performance, Gonoude is on track to cap another successful track and field season. He earned gold in the 3200-meter run on Tuesday, the first day of competition, and took second in the 1600 meter run on Wednesday behind Wilson's Joe Espinol. Espinol set two Colonial League Meet records in the 1600-meter run and 800-meter dash.

"I pulled my quad, and then when my quad got better I pulled my hamstring," Gonoude said.

"I ran a nice and easy two mile [3200 meter run] at Bangor, and then I came back for the Wilson meet and ran the 1600. That's when I knew I was back."

Gonoude ran the 3200 in 10:08.01, well in front of the rest of the field. Notre Dame's Michael Koons finished six-plus seconds after Gonoude, while Pen Argyl's Ty Smith came in third at 10:20.83.

"I had zero plan going in, and I didn't know what I was going to do," Gonoude said. "I did well. I won, so I can't complain. I ran the race and did my best."

Along with Gonoude, four other Falcons placed in the top four of their events, all coming in field events. Tevon Weber (javelin), Mason Donaldson (long jump) and Bryce Fairclough (triple jump) all finished with silver medals, while Levi Renninger finished in fourth place in the pole vault.

Weber admits that he wasn't pleased with his entire outing during the javelin on Tuesday, but one of his later throws of 169-10 was enough to catapult him into second place. Wilson's Drew Hess won gold with a mark of 187 feet.

"It's pretty good," Weber said of his mark. "It's around what I throw on average."

After not having a throwing coach to begin the season, the Falconsboth the boys and girlshave come a long way to cement themselves at some of the best in the league. Since Alene Shafnisky has stepped into that coaching role in the latter half of the season, the Falcons continued to rise to the top of their respective events.

Along with Weber, three girls medaled in throwing events at last week's championship meet.

"I kind of just worked on my technique from last year that my old coach taught me," Weber said. "When the new coach came, she just taught me some more stuff that I needed to know and I worked on it.

"It's more of a process. The girls have been doing it their whole entire varsity careers. They just progressed as they got older."

The Salisbury boys finished seventh out of 16 teams with 55.5 points. Bangor won the league meet with 102 points after winning the regular season title as well.
