Leo Club plans duck race fundraiser at Covered Bridge

Parkland High School's Leo Club will be staging its third annual duck race fundraiser 1 p.m. May 17 at Covered Bridge Park, South Whitehall.

Upper Lehigh Lions Club liaison to the Leos, Jim Osmun, reports this year's proceeds will be given to Csala and Dan Beers of North Whitehall Township.

Csala left her house to go and buy milk before a snowstorm Feb. 1 but along the way was involved in a serious accident with her car.

As a result, she is paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Dan, was paralyzed years earlier in an accident on the same road.

The couple is in need of many living accommodations to adjust to the change in lifestyle since Csala was injured.

One thousand yellow plastic ducks will be placed in the water at the Walking Bridge and taken out at the Iron Bridge.

Leos will be in the stream using hockey sticks to keep the ducks away from the edges. Some students will be in kayaks while others will walk along the banks to guide the ducks to the finish point.

Each duck has a number on the bottom. When someone purchases a ticket, a duck's number is on it.

Osmun reports the first year the stream was slow moving, and it took a long time for all the ducks to float by.

The second year, the water was fast and the race ended in much less time.

In 2013, the duck race brought in $4,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association. The next year, $10,000 was collected for an ill Parkland High School employee.

Margaret Buell is the school's adviser to the club, which has about 100 members.

A prize of $50 goes to the ticket holder of the very last duck to complete the race.

Tickets may be purchased at the Parkland high School's Festival of the Arts, May 14, 15 and 16 or by calling Osmun at 610-799-5333.
