Delaney Haggerty, a senior at Northampton Area High School, was selected to receive the Travelers Protective Association of America's Altruism Award for her dedication to volunteer organizations and for her responsible and caring nature toward her peers and others in the community.
She received the award April 9 during a ceremony at the Northampton Memorial Community Center.
Delaney also displays many leadership qualities and a selfless concern for the well-being of others, which is what the TPA Altruism Award honors.
TPA Post L in the Lehigh Valley is a national nonprofit organization and the largest post of the Pennsylvania division.
The staff members at NAHS determined that Haggerty should be the recipient of this honor. Delaney's involvement in many activities, both in school and in her community, made her a logical choice for this award, they said.
Delaney is the president of student counsel and Caring Kids and is the goalie for the girls' lacrosse team.
Delaney's gentle and caring nature and desire to help others fall in line with her plans to study nursing when she begins her college curriculum next year.
School Counselor Andrea Wasilko spoke on Delaney's behalf and awarded her the TPA award. In addition, Judge Stephen Baratta of Northampton County was present to thank Delaney for her efforts and achievements.
