'May Day Revels' offered at Trinity Episcopal Church

Trinity Episcopal Church of Bethlehem and the Moravian College Undergraduate Conference on Medieval and Early Modern Studies are co-sponsoring their first-ever "May Day Revels: 'Tis The Merrie Month Of May," 5 p.m. May 2, Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 E. Market St., Bethlehem.

Sonnambula, New York City-based viol consort, will present a program, "16th Century Splendors Of The Spanish Renaissance," from the Golden Age of Spanish music.

Last December, a traffic jam from an accident on I-78 kept Sonnambula from performing at "Yuletide Revels." The group is fulfilling its vow to return.

Sonnambula features five experts of early music: a violinist, a tenor, and three players of the viola da gamba. The repertoire mixes sacred and festive selections.

The program will feature intimate "Canciones" (popular tunes with poetic texts), joyful "Villancicos" (songs with rustic themes) and virtuosic instrumental pieces, drawn from more than 450 works from the "Cancionero Musical De Palacio," a manuscript found at the Royal Palace of Madrid. Sprightly spring dances will be scattered throughout the program.

A diverse feast of springtime and May Day foods and beverages will be served after the concert.

A suggested donation will be taken at the door. Admission is free for children under age 12.
