Washington Twp board names emergency management head

Washington Township supervisors appointed a township manager-zoning officer and emergency management coordinator at their April 7 meeting.

Sherry Graver was appointed emergency management coordinator replacing George Ker, who receiver a proclamation for the 35 years he held the post.

Kern's proclamation thanked him for his service as emergency management coordinator.

His countless hours made a lasting contribution to the safety of our community, read Supervisor Chairman Josh Friebolin.

The proclamation was signed by the three supervisors and Secretary JoAnn Ahner.

In other matters, Todd Weidman was appointed township manager and zoning officer.

Friedens Fire Chief Joel Merkel asked if he was a local man and was told he was not.

A letter of thanks was received from the Slatington Public Library for a donation of $1,000.

After receipt of 2014 financial statements, both the Eagles Nest Association and Friedens Fire Company received donations.

Eagles Nest received $500 and the fire company received a $5,000 yearly donation and $15,000 for its equipment fund.

There was a request from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to renew a five-year real estate tax exemption for a disabled veteran. It was granted.

Eight cameras are being purchased with three for use inside the municipal building and five for long-range outdoor use. The cost is $2,000.

Six picnic tables, to be installed in the parks, are being purchased at a cost of $2,666.

Payment is from the recreation fund.

Mildred Kistler asked if some tree cutting is for another communications tower, which it is.

Fire Chief Keith Kibler of Star Hose Company asked when roads will be closed for Turnpike work, so he can make plans.

The communications center will be informed and should contact emergency services.

Resident Ivan Mich-ailoff asked the board about problems with barking dogs.

He was told to speak with the zoning officer.
