SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

At the April 15 school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss announced Salisbury Township School District was recently honored by The National School Boards Association and The Center for Digital Education as a top digital school district in a national survey.

"Schools from across the country were invited to complete the 10th annual digital school districts survey. The survey recognizes exemplary school boards' and districts' use of technology to govern their district, communicate with students, parents and community and improve the learning environment and district operations," according to the school blog.

"Salisbury placed second in the small student population with under 3,000 students.

"Every student, teacher and administrator has access to a digital device – iPad mini in grades K to 1; MacBook Pro in grades 2 to 12. Students in grades 6 to 12 have the opportunity to use the laptop computer for learning both inside and outside of school. "To be recognized as a Top Digital School District by The National School Boards Association and The Center for Digital Education is yet another indication of the dedication of our board members, teachers, administrators and parents to provide the most meaningful technology-rich learning opportunities for our students," Ziegenfuss said.

In other news, student representatives at the high school announced National Honor Society senior members have logged in over 900 hours of community service. Senior Meghan Williams said all hours are due to advisor Paul Koba by May 1; additional hours will be calculated then.

Williams said many of the students have helped with tutoring, volunteered at Good Shepherd, volunteered at Key Club events, worked at the soup kitchen in Allentown, volunteered at an animal shelter and helped with bingo at Cedarbrook Nursing Home.

Upcoming events at the high school include a talent show 7:30 p.m. April 23 and the Race for Adam 10 a.m. May 2. A blood drive will be held May 7.

Model UN was recognized for a recent win at DeSales University; Salisbury came in second overall in the competition.

Secretary of the Board Robert Bruchak announced the public presentation of the 2015-2016 budget is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 4 in the administration building.

Bruchak also announced several bills in the legislature having to do with property tax relief and one to grant immunity to school bus drivers who use the EPI pen on a student. Bus drivers would only use the pen after being trained. Bruchak said several bills are expected to be introduced on pension reform.

In personnel news, Eric Beltz resigned as the assistant softball-pitching coach effective March 25.

Alene Shafnisky was approved as the assistant varsity track coach for the 2014-2015 school term.

Kolton Follweiler was approved as a volunteer assistant middle school soccer coach for the 2014-2015 school term.

The board approved the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit Facilities Plan Committee Report and School Board Resolution to potentially place a multiple disabilities classroom at Western Salisbury Elementary School for the 2015-2016 school year.

Salisbury Middle School Principal Robert Cassidy reported a spring concert will be held May 6 and the art show will be held noon to 3 p.m. May 17 at Salisbury High School. He also shared with the board the newest informal club, "The Kindness Club," started by English teacher Beth Prokesch where middle school students go to WSE to read to the students.

Assistant Superintendent Lynn Fuini-Hetten said administration is working on the summer academy offered to teachers and staff for learning opportunities.

Superintendent Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss announced the libraries will be open this summer on a rotating schedule due to the expected construction in the four buildings.
