LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Veteran Bertram S. Winzer was presented with several proclamations at the April 16 meeting of the Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners.
Winzer was drafted into the Army in 1942 and later received advanced training with the First Special Service Force. Winzer fought in several battles including the Battle of Anzio where his unit became known as "The Devil's Brigade."
On Feb. 3, Winzer and other surviving members of the Devil's Brigade received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honor. He was also awarded the Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor, the highest French decoration March 4.
In other business, there was a conditional use hearing for the Jimmy John's Sandwich shop proposed for the strip mall across from Walmart. Parking may become a problem but there are potential solutions which would entail a crosswalk to access parking for employees in the Walmart parking lot. No outdoor seating is planned.
The plan was approved for Grandview Crossings. The plan was also approved for the sewer planning module. This plan is by Allen Organ and will include apartments, a new Weis market, a gas station, a restaurant and other small retail establishments. The vote for the approval was 4-1 with Commissioner Brian Higgins voting against it.
There is an additional part to this plan which will include a light at Willow Lane and Sauerkraut Lane.
It was suggested this light is not necessary as the four way stop intersection works fine. However, it is a possibility it will not remain that way with the development coming in.
Linda Lehman, a resident of Smith Lane, spoke about the construction at Spring Creek Properties site. Before the project began, it was said trucks and noise would not be a problem. Presently, trucks are using Smith Lane and the back-up alarms on trucks are heard in the night. Lehman suggested noise barriers. The commissioners said the noise is temporary.
The Wild Cherry Lane bridge will possibly be opened soon. Another inspection is needed and a new weight restriction sign must be posted.
Two interns have been hired for the summer. One is from Kutztown University and the other is from Bloomsburg University.
Township Manager Bruce Fosselman said Camp Olympic is nearing completion. The barn is almost completed along with the Pump Park and the Rain Gardens. There will be an open house in the near future.
A shredding event will be held April 25 at the township complex.
