EMMAUS COLUMN Emmaus library celebrates 75 years

The Emmaus Public Library, 11 E. Main St., will celebrate its 75th anniversary with special activities May 11 through 17. The library opened to the public out of a rented space on Chestnut Street in 1940.

There is a children's book costume party planned 6 to 8 p.m. May 14. The children are invited to dress as a character from a children's book. No registration is required.

The Royalaires will provide big band music for dancing 6 to 8 p.m. May 16. This event is free and open to the public. Opening remarks and honoring of guests 6 p.m.

There will be a bake a book contest and silent auction 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16. The contest winners will be announced at noon; silent auction winners at 3 p.m. The proceeds go toward a silent auction to benefit the library. For contest information, visit emmauspl. org.

May 17 there will be a giant tent sale 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. of books leftover from the book sale and discards from the library collection.

Be sure to stop and view the mosaic mural project on the outer wall of the library. The designer Isaiah Zager believes, "Art should not be integrated into museums, it should live free among us." When viewing the mosaic, I'm sure you will agree Emmaus is a fortunate recipient of Zager's design.

Another organization in town celebrating a 75th anniversary is the GFWCPA Woman's Club of Emmaus. Congratulations to all the members for the service you have provided the community since 1940. The club's meetings are held monthly 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday in St. John's Lutheran Hall, 501 Chestnut St. For information, email EWC_PA@ aol.com.

The Emmaus Farmers Market in the KNBT parking lot, 235 Main St., will hold a grand opening Farm Day celebration 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 3. The Emmaus Public Singing Society will perform. For information, visit emmaus- market.com.

The Veterans brick installation at the Emmaus Commemorative Garden will be held 1 to 2 p.m. May 24. The garden, which is in its 11th year and has installed almost 400 bricks, is located next to the Knauss Homestead behind Cintas off Emmaus Avenue. For information, visit emmausremembers. org.

The Emmaus Historical Society will host its regular meeting 7 p.m. May 20 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets. Bob Benner will present part three of his series of programs on "Native Americans of Eastern Pennsylvania and the Jasper Quarries of Vera Cruz." There will be an election of officers prior to the program.

The society's museum, 563 Chestnut St., is open noon to 4 p.m. every Saturday. George DeVault will be at the Emmaus Historical Society museum 2 to 4 p.m. April 25 to sign his book, "FireCall: Sounding the Alarm to save our Vanishing Volunteers." DeVault, who has been a volunteer firefighter since 1981, has served with Emmaus and Upper Milford fire departments.

Senior citizens over the age of 55 are invited to the Emmaus Senior Citizens' meetings at St. Matthew's E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The group meets 1 p.m. Fridays. May programs are May 1: pianist Bob Kahle; May 8: Emmaus Police Officer Jeremy Schilling; May 15: musician Keith Brintzenhoff; May 22: musician Sterling and May 29 is Game Day. The Emmaus Kiwanis Club will join with Kiwanis International in hosting a 5K walk May 9 in the Rose Garden Pavilion in Allentown. Registration begins 10 a.m. This event is held to raise funds for Kiwanis' effort to eliminate project maternal/ neonatal tetanus. For information, call 610-967-3770.

Emmaus Borough Council meets 7 p.m. May 4 and 18 at borough hall, 28 S. Fourth St. The borough offices will be closed May 25 for the Memorial Day holiday.

The compost center will open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays beginning May 4. The center is already open 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The electronics recycling Dumpster is open noon to 6 p.m. the second Monday of each month.

The Emmaus Veterans Committee in recognition of Memorial Day will hold cemetery services 9 a.m. May 17 at Western Salisbury Union Church.

On May 24, the Veterans Committee members will honor their comrades in each of the six Emmaus cemeteries. The ceremony consists of a short prayer service, rifle salute and taps. The ceremonies begin 8 a.m. at Calvary cemetery and then proceed to Old Moravian at Ridge Street, Lutheran Reformed, Northwood and Evangelical at Second and Ridge streets.

On May 25, the annual Memorial Day parade will start promptly 9 a.m. from Emmaus High School and end at the Memorial Triangle where a program will be held. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Emmaus High School auditorium 10 a.m. The committee urges all veterans to participate with their posts.

Every year I look forward to the airing of the Freddy Awards. In case you've never viewed it, I can promise you will be awed by the musical performances of the area's high school students. The program is shown 7 p.m. May 21 on 69 WFMZ-TV.

Don't forget to vote. The polls are open for the primary election 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 19.

Looking ahead: since there are a limited number of spaces available in the borough's five to 12 year old summer parks program, you are encouraged to register as early as possible at borough hall.

Lincoln Elementary School will hold its annual spring festival 4 to 7 p.m. May 28.

Emmaus' community-wide yard sale is set for May 30 with a rain date May 31.

The Special Entertainment Commission's day-long kick-off event for the Summer Concert Series is May 31.
